I think that one of the subjects that urgently needs deep clarification and research is the presence and role of Volksdeutsche before and during WWII. In 1941, two brothers of Ukrainian leader Stepan Bandera were murdered while imprisoned in Auschwitz by Volksdeutsche kapos. Overwhelming majority did not considered themselves Poles, they were the Fifth column pre-war and in attacked and occupied Poland, and what we know about their presence and behavior complicates the entire context of WWII. It should seriously impact and change the widespread understanding of who was a Pole and who was not, and should clearly explain the common misunderstanding leading to why Poles are being unjustly accused of collaboration with Germans. Their presence seemed to have been the catalyst for tragedies like the one in Volhynia, where Poles were clearly collectively blamed for the actions of Volksdeutsche.
