I think that the Devil is a very important character to portray - TopicsExpress

I think that the Devil is a very important character to portray well and to write properly. Im very particular about that. I mean, hes rather an ultimate villain, really. I never took much to renditions of the character that are just sort of extreme, disgusting monsters. The Devil should look good, be appealing, sound appealing, be hypnotic. The Devil should be very charismatic, charming, funny even. His intent is to draw you in and make you trust him. Then he can snag you. Like a lot of great villain characters. His purpose is to trick you and to cheat you, ideally while you either dont even notice or youre even perhaps okay with it. I mean, hes supposed to be the Father of Lies. He runs that shit. Hes that good. Hes the greatest trickster character there is, essentially. Aspects of his character are mirrored in countless others like Hannibal Lecter, the Joker, etc. Not saying hes the original, Im not all up about ancient religions, but the character has definitely come into various aspects of storytelling and culture and has been around for a while as a solid go-to villain. I think as a character the Devil is very fascinating and has had such a long list of interesting portrayals, two of the more notable ones that sort of come more into my thinking of the Devil being Mr. Nick in The Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus and even Hades in Hercules. Some portrayals make him too stoic, some too over the top for me. Both can be entertaining, but I just have always thought that this character should be portrayed a certain way. Anyway Im rambling, just random thought of the evening. **NOTE**: Not religious here, so lets not get into a Bible discussion, all right? This is my opinion on the execution of Satan as a character in various incarnations. Random, yes, but still.
