I think the families of politicians are, or ought to be a non-issue politically. Politicizing family members has an ugly tendency to turn human beings into campaign props. Worse still, it has an even uglier tendency to manufacture human beings in order for them to be used as campaign props, as in the case of Chelsea Clintons pregnancy being intentionally turned into the media circus it has become. (I wouldnt be saying this if the coverage hadnt been sought) But they are a factor in real campaigns: just another scripted element of the performance. Just like the candidates race and gender and other irrelevant crap. Politicians need to look good lying on television, and to accomplish that they need the right hair and the right tie and the right glasses and the right campaign slogan and the right advertising and the right family, where family is just another commodity in that list. We dont seem to be very far from the point where imaging firms in Washington D.C. will be able to offer manufactured, sympathy producing families as commodities for politicians to rent, and have it actually work, so that the viewer-voters will really feel the artificially induced sympathy. Its just another aspect of our cultural devolution into the mindset of so-called reality television.
