I think the idea of downing men and masculine roles is frequently carried to extremes these days. Men do have to do jobs that require courage, the willingness to protect others, and, yes, suppressing feelings sometimes. The genetic and neurological base of the male brain and body is usually adapted to these roles, and being able to perform them is admirable, not a mistake. Men make a convenient repository for our sense of powerlessness in the face of capital (by standing in for upper class interests,) but I believe that male virtues are helpful. Its not that women cant also have these virtues as well, but the nature of men is already part of the way there. Its a mistake to believe that people are tabulae rasae; theyre not. Many of the attempts to unman men (cf Good Men Project) are fairly grotesque, and fly in the face of our natural shape. Sure, you can certainly overdo masculinity, but dont try to excise it.
