I think the name of the article is divisive, but it raises some interesting points, especially the cultural influences and how they might affect ones perception of oneself and how that can be internalized. quote from the article following We talk of self-discovery, self-realization, self-expression, self-actualization, self-invention, self-knowledge, self-betrayal, and self-absorption. It should be no great revelation that the vocabulary of the self feels like a natural way to describe our longings, our obsessions, and our psychopathologies. This type of language is very modern and can be related to capitalism, consumerism and media, imho. Lots covered including transgenderism as a comparative issue or condition. Note, my opinion on this as a medical and social condition is very open, as a gender critical feminist my main point of concern is males defining women, which is not covered in this article, but is a positioning of my concern with some types of trans activism.
