I think the problem with contemporary positive thinking stems from a fundamental disconnect in Americans with the realities of basic human existence. For most of us, especially when compared with our ancestors or those in the developing world, we have to do next to nothing to maintain the baselines of survival. We are born into sturdy housing with clean and healthful water available at the turn of a tap and food is usually a few steps away and takes little effort to prepare. Compare that with the women and children in Africa who collectively spend around 40 billion hours a year walking to, gathering, and carrying back water, much of which is often contaminated. Or our pioneer ancestors who had to plow the prairies to make the sod houses that protected them from the elements. These people know that they are facing a struggle for survival and theyve learned to expect and prepare for the worst. Whereas our society is built around the social delusion that if you want something bad enough, it will be delivered. Weve lost that part of our psyche that involves the struggle against long odds, day in and day out, a collective act of forgetting the sacrifices of others and, like clean water from the tap, we expect our dreams to come to us as easily in waking as they do in sleep. Living is easy, with eyes closed.
