I think these protests in HK will amount to a whole lot of nothing. Apart from the obvious reasons theres one underlying idea I just read and rings as true. Who really wants democracy in China? Maybe 30 years ago HK was the flagship of western prosperity and something to emulate but now? China is the second superpower in the world and it didnt take democracy to achieve that. Im not saying its good over there, in fact Im honestly believe that democracy would improve peoples lives in many ways, not necessarily just economic and I would push for it if I was Chinese. But I get the feeling that the old adage of western freedom and values might be a tough sell in nowadays China and most people dont really care that much in contrast to the newfound possibilities of their country.
