I think this comes from the new common core math teaching: I - TopicsExpress

I think this comes from the new common core math teaching: I asked Alex what half of 28 is. He looked down at his lap for about ten seconds (not counting on his fingers), and then said fourteen. I asked him how he did it, and he said, Well, I have my two thighs, and I put a ten on each one, and then I had the eight, and thats four on each leg, so thats 14 on each. Definitely not the way I would have thought about it. When I asked him who taught him to do it like that, he said he just came up with it himself, but I think its the result of the new way of teaching math by breaking everything into tens and using a lot of visual props.
