I think this is an important issue: I agree that people dont seem to be able to care for their clothes nowadays, which is why I find such fabulous clothes in thrift shops! Part of the problem is that clothes are no longer made to be repaired: since the hems are serged, if you dont have a serger, its hard to fix torn hems, and paying for repairs is often more expensive than buying new clothes. I dont agree that we need home economics classes in schools: mine should have been called Reinforcing Gender Stereotypes, and it taught us how to live in the 1950s, not the modern world. Schools have enough to do without making them where children learn life skills. But there should be other ways to teach some of those skills. My mother and grandmother taught me sewing, knitting, and crocheting. I learned how to cook, clean, launder. Those are the sorts of things we should all learn. Its also very hard, nowadays, simply to find sewing supplies. Usually, I have to order things online, and I live in Boston, where youd think I could find a good sewing shop . . .
