I think this is my first Facebook rant ever, but I am curious - TopicsExpress

I think this is my first Facebook rant ever, but I am curious about the thoughts of others on this topic. Is this the newest stage in progressive parenting? I am not a strict parent and because of my personality I often tend to err on the side of being too free and permissive with my kids. Although, today I was challenged. As I was in the park with Oliver today, I was talking with a young mother. She asked Oliver a couple of questions and he ignored her (because he was tired of being there and simply didnt feel like talking). I nudged him, saying, Oliver, shes talking to you. The woman then informed him, Honey, you dont have to talk to anyone you dont want to. That is your right. She explained to me how she doesnt think kids should never have talk to anyone they dont want to. I was taken back and a little irritated actually. Since when is it ok to be rude? I mean, I fully support a childs need for personal space, not forcing children to hug people when they dont want to, etc.. However, shouldnt communicating value to another person by exercising basic courtesy (acknowledging that someone has spoken to you) be something that is required of our children? I believe so, but is this now considered to be old fashioned? Oy vey.
