I think this is the best review of american sniper ive seen so - TopicsExpress

I think this is the best review of american sniper ive seen so far. I dont think its anti-iraq. Definitely not. I dont think its pro-iraq either. I think that they tried to avoid convoluding the story with a heavy liberal or political bias. They stay on the fence over whether the troops should have even been there. One of Kyles friends raises a bunch of questions about the motives behind the war and kyle doesnt really have a good answer. Kyles own motivations come from his team-spirit to help out his squad and save lives. They dont really engage in the politics, and I respect that, it would really cheapen the movie if they tried to push their views down anyones throats. I would argue that you could set the movie in WWII and it would be roughly the same movie. You dont really care about the war, youre supposed to care about the protagonist, and the protagonists real hurdles are not the bad guys; they are his struggle to maintain sanity and balance his military career with both of his families; his squad and his wife and children. Was the theme of the movie anti-war in general though? Heck yes it was! The movie was all about bemoaning the horrors of war and what families and their young men have to go through during wartime. (to the point where I would have rather watched a mindless action flick) The main character loses touch with reality and only regains it by helping other soldiers with PTSD. War is a terrible thing, and this movie did an okay job showing that. Did I like the movie? No. I think it got caught up its own asshole trying to be too weepy-moany and all the characters were very two-dimensional. They didnt give Kyles character much emotional depth beyond violent/regretful/PTSD-y tough guy and tried to get the audience to identify based on a series of paragon-like statements and actions but not with him as a person. Do we, as an audience want two hours of explosions and the protagonists wife freaking out, or do we want some real, thoughtful moments where we see who the character is? I know that what Id pick. For instance: Do we care about the 101st airborne in band of brothers because they can kill germans, or do we care about them for scenes like this? https://youtube/watch?v=zMctnc_ogD4 Also, PTSD is not just feeling sad. That line kind of made annoyed.
