I think this is the festival I previously mentioned RBB third - TopicsExpress

I think this is the festival I previously mentioned RBB third graders attend as part of their third grade Commuinty social studies curriculum. Despite generally loving my childrens elementary, I have to say that it really dropped the ball on this, I had four children go through Binford with four different great third grade teachers, but we were 0-4 on learning about the Monroe Co. community. I didnt even know that was the year long state mandated theme until someone from RBB was telling me about the things their students do. This is such a loss. They could visit the Monroe Co. Museum, have parents come in to tell the class about their job and how it fits into the community ( which would also be a great starting place for career awareness), local government leaders (mayor, council, parks and rec., school board) could explain first hand what kind of things local government does. There are tons of places for field trips. A family guide with suggestions, like Cynthia Ports visit to the Tulip Tree Testle, or the Blue River cave boat trip in northern Lawrance county could be handed out at school breaks to encourage family-school involvement and family time together and the children could discuss any local places they visited upon coming back to school. There is just so much that could be done with this. At least in the past the Convention and Visitors Bureau had walking tour pamphlets historical areas of Bloomington. Why wouldnt we our third graders to do a report about something famous locally when they could choose from people like Joshua Bell, Meg Cabot, or Hoagy Carmichael, factories like RCA and the Showers Furniture Factory, the ecology of caves and karst areas, the famous places Indiana Limestone has been used, the engineering behind reservoirs. The list is endless. I hope other schools didnt waste this topic as ours did. And before someone says it was because of high stakes testing, this was before that was so powerful. It was not the reason.
