I think this needs to be said, I am tired of people trying to - TopicsExpress

I think this needs to be said, I am tired of people trying to paint me as someone who hates everyone who has moved to Currituck from somewhere else. This was posted in response to someone seeking to illuminate the US flag which is flown over the Currituck Visitors Center in Moyock. =========================================== My father served 4 years in the Army/Air Force (Korean War in Alaska as a Tech. Master Sergeant) and 15 years in Air Force Reserves at Langley working for OSI (performing security clearance investigations). He also worked 25 yrs. for Civil Service at Naval Air Reworks Facility (NARF) Norfolk as a jet aircraft engine mechanic (A6 and F14) I understand the concern of veterans and citizens alike regarding honor of the flag. Our flag should be respected and taken down at night. Ourflag should also not be flown in inclement weather. With regards to illumination of the flag, the county does not need to contribute any further to light pollution. The County needs to engage a veterans group or the Boy Scouts to perform proper ceremonies for raising and lowering the flag. I have people who come to our farm in Maple because we do not have light pollution, and they enjoy the rural setting. I have many people whom I consider to be my close friends who have moved to Currituck from elsewhere - friends who do not want streetlights, etc. - they want to preserve the nature of our community. I have no problems with people moving here because they enjoy the rural atmosphere. But when they start trying to put in street lights, curbs, gutters, sidewalks, big box stores and other items which are clearly NOT compatible with a rural setting, I *WILL* ask them to leave. Disrespecting the natives of this county and their wisdom troubles me - for generations back, our forefathers (as backward as they may seem to people who move here) have served in the US Lifesaving Service, Coast Guard, Merchant Marine and the Armed Forces, risking their lives for the safety of everyone in this country. I find it unacceptable for people who come here from elsewhere - because the like the rural quiet nature of Currituck - to then try to change/destroy the nature of our rural community. For that I will be continue to be “QuickDraw McGraw”, calling them out until the day I die - out of respect for my forefathers. I published the newspaper, The Independent in Currituck from 2001 through 2009. I never ventured into the us (locals) vs them (people who moved here) mentality. It was usually “us” (the taxpayers) vs. “them” (the crooked/inept politicians). At some point you have to stand for what you believe, and I believe that people, who want to destroy the rural nature of our county, will end up destroying the very heart and soul of our community. At that point we are no better than Va Beach, Norfolk, Portsmouth and other urban areas.
