I think tournaments with 3 games in one day should not exist. For many reasons, for example some of these games can last up to 4 hours long, if you have 3 games that go to the death, your playing for near on 12 hours! Now that is too much, and the quality of chess just drops. The last time I played in a 3/2 event my round 3 game on the Saturday although I won was just full of mistakes and blunders. Some of the events shorten the time control slightly but it is still potentially 10 hours of chess in one day. Moreover if it is a staying over event, I like to use those events as a holiday so on the Saturday I like to go for a meal with friends and have a few sherberts (occasionally overboard, cough cough!) The last thing I want is to sit at a board for another 4 hours, there is of course the option of a round 3 bye but I have payed for 5 games so it would be costing me money to take a bye. I can understand the motivation for keeping the room costs low and giving people who work late on Friday a chance to play all 5 games potentially but the amount of people who take round 3 byes instead of round 1 byes are you really reducing the byes? 3 in one day is too much and just kills any fun. On that note that means I will not be playing at Telford which delays my return to chess following my temporary retirement til 6-1-15.
