I think we all know that we have a lot to learn from children but sometimes it can be hard to remember what it is we should be learning. Each week while teaching childrens yoga, I have them write answers to questions in a journal and each week the answers astound me. These are just some examples of what I see: What is the best compliment you can give someone or whats your favorite compliment to receive? - you are strong - you are kind - you are a great leader (Kids didnt write things like I like your shirt or nice hair cut. Think about the compliments you give every day. Are there enough of them? Are they meaningful like these? Are they true?) What do you do to feel safe and calm when youre nervous or afraid? - I hug whoever is closest to me - I remind myself that I am strong and I am loved - I close my eyes and take 3 long, slow breaths like we learned in yoga (Think about what you do when stressed or anxious. Do you stuff it farther down and pretend its not there? Do you act angry or frustrated with the people around you? Or do you ask for help when you need it, hug someone or anyone, and slow your breath down? These simple tips live in the minds and hearts of children.) One example from a similar project is below. What can we learn from little girls about how to better love our bodies for what they are and, more importantly, for what they do for us? Maybe take one minute today to silently thank one body part for something its done for you lately (ex: your heart for opening to love, your feet for taking you where you want to go, your hands for letting you hold loved ones, etc).
