I think we do everything possible not to disappoint children and in so doing, we set them up for failure because sooner or later, a disappointment is going to happen. Dont misunderstand…Im not suggesting we should TRY to disappoint kids. But rather, we need to teach our kids how to handle disappointment. Lets help them to cope and understand that tomorrow is another day and other opportunities will come our way. A personal example: One year my youngest son played little league baseball. That year they didnt do so well and yet, at the end of the season, all the players got trophies. The Little League Administration didnt want to see a last place team go through a disappointment. They might as well have said, Its okay if you dont do win, were still going to reward you. My generation got through the disappointments of not always winning and we survived and thrived. Lets not send well intended but misguided messages of If you dont meet or exceed the standard, its okay; well just lower them. Your thoughts if you please.
