I think we need to get the ball rolling on looking at the real - TopicsExpress

I think we need to get the ball rolling on looking at the real advantages and disadvantages of having a None of the Above option on the ballot. I just voted, and I found myself standing there staring at the candidates names, and thinking of all the attack ads, the government shutdown, the bickering, the corruption, and the false promises of our elected officials over the past couple years. I honestly cant blame people for not voting. I feel like Im handcuffed. And at least people who dont vote bring attention to how weak our democracy is. Think about it, 65 million people voted for Obama in 2012. That is out of approximately 130 million registered voters, out of 200 people of voting age, and out of 300 million people. Out of 300 million people, 65 million voted for the winner (just over 20%). Is it a strong democracy when about 1/5 of the population votes for the winner? How are we supposed to demand higher quality races and candidates when they only need a quarter of the population to sign off on them? For the 2012 election, 57 other countries had a higher voter turnout than the US. Thats depressing, and I feel like something needs to change. I want more for our Democracy.
