I thought I had posted this in answer to a question from Kathy - TopicsExpress

I thought I had posted this in answer to a question from Kathy Lowry Starustka, but it apparently did not go through- so here it is again. I have been asked what my suggestion regarding DNA verification/qualification of parentage of Half Arabian horses should be. 1. I do not believe that ALL Half Arabians should have DNA typing for registration purposes, although is should be available as an option. The reason for this is that the vast majority of Half Arabians are not Arabian show horses and are used in things that do not require registration. If the cost of registration increases by $60 we will lose a lot of Half Arabian registrations because the owner/Breeder does not feel the need to pay more for papers. Look at the drop in membership when dues are raises by $5-10 to verify this. Besides the cost, someone who wants to cheat could very easily send in DNA on the Half Arab colt by Poco Super King out of Bint Desert Mare but do markings on their AQHA foal and substitute that horse-- selling the true half Arab to a 4H kid or family without papers. that AQHA horse then has ben DNA typed as a Half Arabian and unless it is re typed no one is ever the wiser. 2. I believe that ALL Half Arabians showing at the Regional and National level should have DNA Verification/Qualification done. There is an argument that there should not be 2 levels of registration. I agree. You are a member of AHA, but if you chose to show you must also have a competition card. Why shouldnt a horse- PB OR H/A have a competition card that shows that it has had a one time Verification/Qualification of parentage? 3. ANY PERSON FOR ANY REASON should be able to request verification on any horse by putting up $100 (or 60- or what ever reasonable cost for the DNA typing would be). This could be done by a person or a group of persons and no reason need be gives. No one is being accused of anything. If the horse passes the Typing that is noted on the papers and if not the papers are cancled unless there is- as occasionally happens- a mistake in sire or dam and that can be verified by further typing and corrected on the certificate of registry. I believe that this would successfully deal with the problem of RINGERS without increasing the cost of registering a Half Arabian for those who do not show.
