I thought I would share with you a letter I wrote to a friend of mine, who says he overindulged over Thanksgiving... December 2, 2013 213 E. Main St. Ottumwa, Iowa 52501 Dear Mr. William Arthur, Jr. Thanks for the nice letter of Thanksgiving Day. It was a very good Holiday. We have few pheasants around here anymore. It certainly isn’t like it was when I was an eight-year-old child and Dad would drag Mother and I along through the cornfields, while he shot his three birds out of several hundred we would flush during the morning. I still expect him to shoot a bird now and then and since he drug me along as a child; I felt it was only fair that I drag him along as a senior citizen. He managed to sneak away for several years without shooting a bird as the pheasant population dwindled and I came to the place where I couldn’t even remember the last time I had seen him harvest a bird. So, I decided a few years ago the only way to right this wrong was to take him to a Game Preserve. Now, I am not much in favor of killing the last Passenger Pigeon or bludgeoning the last Dodo bird. So, I thought this was the best way to preserve a tradition that has lasted fifty years and yes the old eighty-year-old Gentleman can still swing his little bolt-action .410 shotgun. Our group of five managed to harvest twenty-three birds from the group of forty released and I know for sure, one of them was his. It only cost me $850 to watch him shoot that bird and I thought it a bargain, as he counseled me on being thrifty and the poor economy. But, you know, I can’t get that money in the coffin with me and I truly believe I can take the memories to the grave with me. I am glad you enjoyed your breakfast and Thanksgiving Dinner. I had a nice supper of left overs, I spent the whole lunch hour and afternoon cleaning those birds. My nephew jumped in and helped clean a couple, but everyone else was too busy eating. Still, I would do it again if God grant me the opportunity. Looking forward to many more Thanksgivings with the old Man, God willing and the river doesn’t go dry. Thanks for your patronage. Owen McKee.
