I thought Id share this... This is the speech I gave at my Grandfathers services. Papaw: - Welcome and thank guests for attending - For those who do not know me my name is Nick. Wade was my Grandfather. - I knew in my heart just a few days after my grandfather passing I would be speaking during this service. You can tell by looking around this room how big of an impact one life has. How many lives hes touched. How many people loved him and how many people he loved. - My grandfather was raised in the country. Taught what we now consider to be old school values. Meaning, respect your mother and father, treat others how you wish to be treated, love your neighbor and most importantly of all, love your family unconditionally. - He graduated High School, served his country in the Army, married his sweetheart and stayed faithful to her until the day she died. He raised 3 kids working 3 sometimes 4 jobs. All while making time to take is son hunting, showing his daughters how to stand up for themselves and show them all the unconditional love of a Father. He even took in one of his grand babies and raised her as his own. Thats a heck of a man isnt it? - While preparing this I thought of 3 ways to accurately describe my grandfather... He was loving. He loved his family. No one can ever debate that. He loved his friends. He loved the outdoors. He loved his Country. And he loved his God. - He was kind. A relic in this day in age. Give you his last dollar and the shirt off of his back. - This last way... I racked my brain to find a better phrase to describe this feeling but I none seemed to fit. Paster I apologize... Lord I apologize... But... My grandfather was a bada**! (pause for laughter if any) He could hunt and trap anything with four legs. He could skin anything with four legs. He built houses. He built barns, He built cars. He built and repaired atvs. And... if it came down to it he could take care of business if someone was messing with his family. - Lastly, I would like to share a quick story... The last time I seen my grandfather was about a month ago. I spent about 2 hours with him and Joyce. Laughing... Telling stories... As the evening became late, Papaw and Joyce had to leave to go to church. As we were saying our goodbyes I snapped a picture with him. Little did I know at the time, it would be a photo of the last time I would see him alive. After our photo he had to go to his bedroom to grab his coat. As he came out and was just about to leave, he handed me a pocket knife. All he said was, I want you to have this. (Pull out knife) - This pocket knife symbolizes all you need to know about my grandfather... Opened its sharp and is ready to defend you and your family. Although sharp it was given as a gift of love. So the next time you see a pocket knife... Remember Wades gift of love and above all else remember... he loved you.
