I thought he would never die - Lt Colonel Benjamin Adekunle. At least he never acted and spoke in those days like one capable of dying. Lt Col. Benjamin Adekunle, self-acclaimed Black Scorpion! The man who spoke about Igbo civilian population during the Civil War like they were vermin...cattle....beasts! Let us hear some of his infamous anti-Igbo words ......In this section of the front that I rule-- and that is the whole South front from Lagos to the border of Cameroon...I do not want to see the Red Cross, Caritas Aid, World Church delegation, Pope, Missionary, or UN Delegation. I want to prevent even one Ibo (Igbo) having one piece of food to eat before their capitulation? We shoot at everything that moves, and when our forces move into the centre of Igbo territory, we shoot at everything, even at things that do not move........ Benjamin Adekunle, (translated interview with German Reporter, Randolph Baumann, of STERN Magazine; also published in De Telegraaf; quoted in The Economist, 24 August 1968, and in the book, Brutality of Nations, by Dan Jacobs.). Now Adekunle is dead, abandoned by the northerners he served like he was their lackey, abandoned by the very country that he committed ethnic genocide for. Now he stands before His Maker to give account of the blood of thousands of civilians that he spilled in a time of war! Lt Col. Benjamin Adekunle (3rd Marine Command/ Amphibious Brigade), along with Murtala Mohammed (2nd Army) and Col. Shuwa Mohammed (1st Army) constitute the triad of Nigerian military officers that carried out uncontrolled and summary extermination of Igbo civilian populations in their captured territories...as if it was part of the war effort. In Asaba (1968) and Onitsha (1968), Murtala Mohammed carried out daily execution of Igbo male populations after his daily dose of rapes of their women. When he entered Onitsha on a Sunday morning, he dragged out 240 male worshippers from the Methodist Church, tied their hands behind their backs and executed them Nazi-style....for no other reason except that they were Igbo Christian worshippers. Col Shuwa Mohammed used Gwodogwodo soldiers from Tchad as sweepers to take the first hale of Biafran Ogbunigwe rockets. The ones who survived this onslaught were then given free hand to rape daily, in Nsukka and environs, Igbo women, married and single and to daily hunt down and kill off the male populations like wild game! They went on and set the university Library and Zik Library on fire for no reason except for their perceived reason that the books in those libraries helped Biafra produce the dreaded Ogbunigwe! Let the death that Adekunle, Murtala and Shuwa died be a reminder to those in power that the hands of celestial justice might be slow but can never be waived away. I wish I could tell Benjamin Adekunle to rest in peace but I can not. Only the grace of Jesus Christ can free him from the certain end that awaits those who spill blood.
