I thought that the lines around my eyes were probably the best bet, for the photo... A Poetry Salute - By Ruth Calder Murphy - They weren’t there until recently, those lines around my eyes - nor the stretchmarks on my tummy, nor the thread veins in my thighs, nor the dimples in my bottom that I cannot refute - so I’m writing this today, to them - a poetry salute. For my lines are maps of travels, of battles fought and won, my stretchmarks tell the story of two daughters and a son, the thread veins and the dimples tell of perseverance, grit - and the fact I carried on when I didn’t feel like it. My body is a work of art that carries, in its cells my memories - the loves, the loss, the meetings and farewells - and folds around the moments that helped to make me Me, in lines and spots and creases, for everyone to see. So, I have lines around my eyes that, till recently, weren’t there, also stretchmarks on my tummy and slight sagging - everywhere; and they all declare my living and continuing to be, so I’m writing this salute today to them, sincerely.
