I told you so. Yeah I said it! On September 26, 2003 the Chatham County Commission approved what is quite possibly the worst deal in the history of Chatham County by a 7 to 1 vote (I was the only one that voted against it). Ironically and almost 11 years later to the day, it appears that my lone vote will be justified and the worst deal ever will be corrected. As the lone vote against the joke that some call a police merger Im proud to say that I think its over because Savannah refuses to treat the unincorporated area residents as equals. Unfortunately it will take 1.5 years to split the departments once the commission votes to end the police agreement but as far as Im concerned the unincorporated area residents will not have to worry much longer about subsidizing the cost of crime fighting in the City of Savannah nor will they have to continue worrying about their lack of a voice when it comes to the operations of their police department. The vote to terminate the agreement will be on the Chatham County Commission agenda at the end of this month and unless something drastic happens and the City of Savannah comes to its senses and agrees to a truly merged police department, I assure you that I for one will vote for the agreement to end. Although I can’t speak for the others I will tell you that I believe that all other Chatham County Commissioners will vote with me to end the agreement and that our vote will correct the 11 year long mistake. Afterwards the unincorporated county residents can rejoice because they will be able to look forward to having a better police department with better services and for a much lower cost . Sincerely, Dean Kicklighter Chatham County Commissioner 7th District
