I too, believe this. When I was young we as a nation did not have a problem with obesity. The heaviest person I ever saw was Jackie Gleason on TV. There was no low fat foods, very little prepared foods and certainly nothing with high fructose corn syrup. We ate bacon & eggs for breakfast, sandwiches or the like for lunch, and dinner always consisted of meat, potatoes a vegetable and salad. We did not have many fast food places and those were considered a treat when our folks would take us, which wasnt often because my dad insisted on a regular dinner at home. My mother didnt buy soda or chips either. Those were considered a treat for summer picnics or holidays. We didnt really snack in between meals because there wasnt any snack foods laying around. We didnt eat sweetened cereal, because my mother didnt want us eating a lot of sugar. Cookies, cakes and pies were in short supply too for the same reason. My mom would buy oranges, bananas and of course we always had apples in plentiful supply because we had trees in our backyard. On occasion we would have macaroni and cheese - homemade, never from a box, and once in a great while spaghetti because once again my dad was not fond of it - my point here being we didnt each much pasta or rice for that matter. I really believe it is the commercial marketing of these unhealthy foods that have caused our obesity problems and in turn an epidemic of diabetes. If we just go back to the basics I think we would see a resolution to the problem.
