I, too frequently perhaps, resort to analogies that most people have never experienced first hand. I played American football from 10 to 18. Those are critical years in every individuals life. I learned I could do things physically that few other people can do, but not as well as the best I saw. I was not a specialized player. I learned by high school that I would never excel at any position on the most elite level, but that was not a great disappointment. Even without any injury I would never run a 10 flat 100 yard dash. But I could be a starter on any team I ever played on. I concluded I was a born and bred generalist or utility player. After all, what coach really cares that you could throw a football 20 yards pretty accurately with either hand, when they wanted a one-armed accurate long ball thrower? Life as we experience it is shaped by rules of the game. I accept now that I was never a team player. I only played for my own visceral pleasure. It was more like dancing for joy than for applause. Applause is allocated to the specialist under the rules of game in this life. I chose to make up my own game. Get your game on.
