I too have had people close to me try and shame me for being a single mother and being poor. No matter how much my friends may tell me that I am only cash poor, the reality is that there is a lot of shaming that gets directed my way. My saving grace is that I look at my son and feel that my choices are on the right track. I also have community that fills me with such love, support and confidence that it is easier to ignore those voices that down play the kinds of sacrifices single parents and single Black mothers make in full view of a world that is always telling us that we are pariah, the source of Black male violence, unworthy of respect and love.
