I too understand the feeling that there needs to be a place where our young students can just be; a haven away from occupation and its defenders. But Amira Hass is not a defender of the occupation. She is one of the bravest voices for justice in Palestine that Ive ever known in journalism. Amiras reporting has done more for Palestine than many can claim to have done with theirs. Next to family, she is the one person I wanted to hug and shed a tear of joy with with Palestines status at the UN was upgraded on 29 November 2012 as we celebrated in our thousands in downtown Ramallah. What happened with Amira at Birzeit is neither acceptable nor justified. Absolutism is a sign of weak minds and this expression of absolutism should not be harbored at Birzeit university, which is a source of pride for all Palestinians. Academia is a setting where freedom of thought should rein, must be paramount. If we allow the voices of absolutism to reign then we, as a society, condemn ourselves & our youth to the abyss of oppression & isolationism. We owe it to ourselves, not just Amira, to confront the cowardly attitudes that pushed some to reject her attendance & others to see in her participation anything but added value. haaretz/mobile/.premium-1.618007?v=2755AA5DA7E3E7BA653B791669C72AEA
