I took Claire to see Catching Fire last night. Duncan saw it yesterday afternoon with some friends. I really wanted my kids to see this film, because although there are parts that are violent, it has opened a door for some very serious conversations about freedoms that we enjoy in our nation. Yes, I am fully aware that these books and films are purely fiction. However, some of the aspects of the dystopian future depicted are very possible here. It was very eye opening for them both to realize that in some other countries, it is not only possible but fairly commonplace for a person to be pulled out of a crowd and publicly executed for simply supporting a cause that opposes the powers that be. Public beatings, arrests, and seizure and destruction of private property are the norm in some places. Claire is now voraciously reading Mockingjay. She just cant wait for the movie to come out next year to see what happens next.
