I took a look at this weeks School Board agenda, which has a schedule of the Boards meeting for 2015. For the last 8 years, the Board has had two meetings a month, on the first and third Tuesday of the month. Theyll be meeting much less often now after the new Board is seated. There is only one meeting scheduled for December, February, March and April. Indeed, the March and April meetings are scheduled six weeks apart. The new schedule concerns me. Having such infrequent meetings will make it more difficult for the School Board to provide effective oversight of whats happening at the district. Agendas for meetings will be heavy, which provides less time for questions and careful analysis of issues. Almost by necessity, the School Board will have to grant the Superintendent broad decision making powers thus taking important policy decisions away from public input. In reality, its probably impossible for the School Board to function without meeting more often - even if to approve items that, by law, require the Boards approval. What is likely to happen, therefore, is that the Board will call for special meetings. Special meetings only require 24-hours notice. That means that the District can sneak up votes on important issues without sufficient notice to the community. I dont know if the new schedule is in response to the COPS grant, but I do think that it should make us all more concerned about any fast one the district plans to pull on us.
