I took an 800 mile round trip to visit my chrome guys. This process is Vacuum Metalising, the very same as what the original Daft Punk helmets were chromed with. It is a lot different from the spray on processes that are becoming more readily available, a lot more durable and less likely to wear away or tarnish. After the parts are lacquered they are place under extreme levels of vacuum. Aluminium is exploded into the chamber, which vaporises and coats the parts with a mirror finish. A second layer of lacquer is then applied, this coat will have a tint if required. This lacquer-aluminium-lacquer sandwich is what makes this process more complicated, both in preparation and application, but the results are worth it. Weve still not worked out all the problems, but we are getting close!! Paying a visit was extremely beneficial, but exhausting.
