I took my mom to see MALEFICENT last night. Seriously, I sometimes wonder if film critics are just dead inside. How could anyone not take a big dose of joy from a film so lavish and fun to watch? No, the plot isnt complex, the characters arent much more than sketches, but Angelina Jolie makes all that irrelevant - Her performance just oozes with wicked charisma, set upon a background of technicolor magical splendor, wondrous creatures, shimmering spells, and stunning beauty. Its a simple fairy tale turned inside-out, and we loved it. Ive made this argument before - Not EVERY film needs to be ocean deep - sometimes a simple fable is all you need.
