I took part in the annual debate at Abertay University for Freshers today on the panel debating the Referendum issues on the motion It is time for Scotland to become an independent nation state. With Patrick Harvie I was representing Yes Scotland (Jenny Marra and Alex Johnstone represented Better Together) and answered questions posed by students over nearly two hours. On an initial vote in the audience of 350 first year students by electronic clicker 53% supported the motion with 33% opposed and 15% undecided. After the debate this had changed to 66% in favour, 30% against and 4% undecided, a 13% gain for Yes. This was a great opportunity to hear from first-time voters. It is very encouraging that so many of the students, from a variety of backgrounds and countries, have engaged with the issues and come to the conclusion that a Yes vote is an essential step towards making Scotland a better place.
