I took the time today to watch the recording of the Epigenetics of ME/CFS webinar hosted by the Solve CFS Iniative, who invited (principal investigator) Patrick McGowan to explain about the first epigenetic study performed in ME/CFS. I can recommend this webinar to all who wish to understand more about 1/ the basics of epigenetics, and the important role of DNA methylation in epigenetic expression (in short: hypermethylated genes show less expression, hypomethylated genes are more active) 2/ the importance of the results of the recently published de Vega/Vernon/McGowan study (heres the link again to the open access publication in PloS ONE: plosone.org/article/info%3Adoi%2F10.1371%2Fjournal.pone.0104757 ): compared to healthy controls, ME/CFS patients show different gene expression in (1) immune cell responses, (2) kinases activity, and (3) metabolism regulation at the cellular level. This study is the first epigenetic confirmation of immune cell dysregulation (hyperactivation mainly) found by numerous other researchers in the past and present, and a clear incentive to further research kinase activity and cellular metabolism in ME/CFS.
