I trained and worked as a midwife in a rural hospital in Mpumalanga. According to my midwifery register, I delivered more than 100 babies. In other words, there is more than 100 human beings in and around Bushbuckridge who were ushered by me into the earth realm. I was the first one who received them, and the one who cut the umbilical cord. I am now reflecting on the spiritual significance of cutting an umbilical cord and I have a goosebumps moment. Just imagine if all midwives belonged to a secret society, and we were taught a secret chant that we did in our hearts when the baby that we are delivering lands in our hands. I shudder to think of the ripple effect of such power. Childbirth is becoming more and more like a disorder, it is treated mechanically, there is no ritual attached to it. By the time the mother goes to hospital, the baby has a name already. There is no special naming ceremony except for attaching that sticker to the tiny hand. To all the midwives out there, midwifery is a NOBLE calling. It is not different from High Priesthood. It is only now that I understand why I had to train as a midwife.
