I tried not watching this for as long as I could. Watch this video, remembering that Osama Hamdan is the top representative of Hamas in Lebanon and is a member of the organizations politburo, a member of the Arab National Congress, and of the Arab Islamic Conference of the Board of Trustees of the Jerusalem Institute in Lebanon. Here he is confronted by his own, horrible, words perpetuating the Anti-Semitic blood libel. To those who pretend that this is a statement of a marginal extremist who does not represent a mainstream Palestinian perspective, please remember his office. He is a representative of the Palestinian leadership. I spent much of last night emphasizing the synergy of Zionism and Humanism I affirm. What do I believe would make the difference towards ending the violence and renewing any hopes for peace between Gaza and Israel, more than anything else right now? For evidence that anyone representing the Palestinian people affirms their conviction that Israel has a right to exist, that Zionists are human beings, and that they wish to live in peace. I do not hear that from the Palestinian leadership. I just dont. And I hate its absence. I hate the death spiral. I hate hatred. I will call out when extremists in Israel betray our ethical commitments. Israel calls that out when it happens, as it does happen. But there is no comparison between a self-critical democratic polity and a leadership that believes what this representative believes, says - and evades. We need, Gaza needs, these poor, wretched, abandoned civilians-made-martyrs desperately need, more Palestinian leaders like Salaam Dr.Salam Fayyad. Lead your people forward, I cry! Bring us all forward by handing your children hope and the ability to build institutions above the ground that educate and dignify.
