I tried to get help for several hours today for this exhausted mama seal at Pt. Dume in Malibu, CA and her newborn pup, who lay dying at the other end of the beach - at Little Dume. I kept calling Animal Control and Water Wildlife Rescue and just got voicemail messages. I even called and pleaded with a couple of 911 operators to connect me with a living person who could help, instead of connecting me to a voicemail message - all to no avail. I finally reached the Zuma Beach Lifeguard station and was told that the two seals would be added to their long list of beached seals for the day, and they would get to them as soon as they could. I asked the lifeguard if I could reunite the newborn at the other end of Pt. Dume beach with her mother here. He warned me that if I touched either of them, I would be committing a federal offense. So I made the lifeguard swear on his life that help was on the way. And then my dog, Faith, and I sat with this beautiful seal until we had to head home. She kept looking into my eyes, and I kept reassuring her that help was on the way, while praying that help was really on the way...
