I try not to do this on fb..but seems appropriate on this sad day to share my Squirrell story.. Im a day late and a dollar short as always...just got the news...so here goes: About 15 years ago i met Squirrell Man in the old Hippo courtyard. Long nappy dreads, military coat over a tie-dye, guitar strapped across his back w/ an old leather strap, accompanied by an old mutt....a modern day rambler... He told me he had been on tour w The Grateful Dead for almost 100 shows and was an Ex-pat and Veteran that was part of a special forces outfit responsible for seizing Manuel Noriegas home in Panama. He had hopped too many trains to count, had even partied w Stevie Ray Vaughn. Like any rational person, i thought he was full of shit. Whenever you mentioned his name to downtown folks around the Goula his name was synonymous w Buschman St.,He was a living legend. If you didnt know Squirrel, you didnt spend enough time downtown. Skip 10 years forward me and Kirsten Cooley are stumbling around New Orleans on a hot July afternoon when I pass a familiar face sitting on the steps of St. Louis Cathedral sipping on a Four Loko. I could tell he was sick.My stepmother Debbie Shemper had just passed away, his stomach looked like hers before she..... I asked Squirrel if hed let me give him a lift back to Hattiesburg. After much debate..the self proclaimed Mississippi Hippie said on one condition, you buy me another Four Loko ...i did. It was worth its weight in gold to match wits w that wild man for a few more short years...CHEERS TO YOU SQUIRRELL!!!! Tthe most interesting person Ive ever met....shine on you crazy diamond https://youtube/watch?v=kKZfRAuY-M4
