I try not to post about things that I cant think of a solution for. I often post about street harassment because I honestly believe that educating the public about it and the way it makes its subjects feel, can honestly make a difference. However, as much thought as Ive given to this police v. black people thing, I cant think of a solution, and that scares me. Lately, Ive been reading about studies that have shown that presenting a person with logical and factual evidence in order to persuade them to abandon a position they feel strongly about, actually has the undesired effect of making them believe even more in their chosen position (anti vaxxers for example). I then read another study that showed that white people are more likely to support harsher legislation when they believe that of the people getting punished, a higher percentage is black. Then, there is the widely spread image of the inherently violent black man in this country. Those 3 things together paint such a grim picture. Theres a mentality that is in dire need of reassessment, but the presentation of fact will likely do more harm than good. And thats extremely scary. Im honestly terrified of one day raising black sons in this country.
