I try to avoid a lot of the mainstream media, to keep from being - TopicsExpress

I try to avoid a lot of the mainstream media, to keep from being angry all the time. I read the NYT and various publications via google news and watch clips in social media now and then. I dont watch TV news. Not even the Daily Show, anymore. So when stupid mainstream ideas finally reach me, Im sometimes caught off guard. The idea that Obama, because hes black or African or Secret Mulsim, is somehow micromanaging our response to Ebola to make it less effective, either because he cares more Africans than Americans (thats the nice narrative), or that he as the antichrist, wants to start a biblical plague, seems, alas to be spreading in the land. Like a virus. I find it funny, that the same people, who when asked about 20k deaths per year from our firearm hobby, tell me to suck it up, we dont live in a dictatorship, want the President to set up internal concentration camps and seal the borders. Because of five or six people. 20 thousand? Suck it up. 3? concentration camps, napalming villages, seal the borders… Ebola wimps. Grow a pair. Its also really funny, that all of a sudden, these people are worried about health care. Hey, remember when you guys were saying WE HAD THE BEST SYSTEM IN THE WORLD? Do these people want more research and development? Money for the CDD or the NIH? Better support for the NGOs that work on these things? No, thats socialism. Climate scientists? All a big conspiracy. Science Bad! God good! No, Ive read the tweets of GOP lawmakers who want to slaughter the infected from 50,000 feet; they want some sort of government/state level quarantine, which, guys, get this, is never going to work because we live in a free society, we dont live in Cuba or North Korea, we simply dont have the infrastructure in place to slam the border closed. Because of who we are. All of that free movement is about commerce. Free trade. Remember that? Remember the free trade thing? Conservatives so eager to point out the unintended consequences of well meaning liberal interventions seem oblivious to the unintended consequences of onerous quarantine, which is that people rout around the blockages, and end up infecting more people. I read a bunch of articles about this during the SARS outbreaks awhile back. Im not against preparedness training and looking at these procedures and responding to the threat appropriately; what Im against is listening to the same people who dont believe in global warming or evolution or health care funding lay out their stupid ideas on how to micromanage this crisis. They have already invalidated themselves; they have proven their opinions are worthless. I am a paranoid fearful person who has long figured wed have a plague based die-back. Ebola isnt it. About the only thing that could make it a catastrophe, I think, would be to seal the borders, let Africa go to hell, turn into a giant evolutionary petri dish where the thing learns how to go airborne or whatever. The compassionate thing to do so frequently turns out to be the right thingy to do and the enlightened self-interested thing to do. We need to help the infected countries control this outbreak. To do this we will expose ourselves to a handful of cases, while, hopefully, preventing this thing from going exponential. Fearful racist mouth-breathing bigoted GOP assholes who have been fighting to keep their own people from getting medical insurance via Medicare arent the people to listen to on this. Amazingly.
