I use a number 5 nozzle and GWF5 welding goggles, the code here in England GWF is Gas welding flux, these eliminate the bright glare you often experience with conventional steel welding goggles. I coat the welding rod in the paste and start at one end, usually the most curved end or difficult part of the panel and tack at 1 inch intervals, I try to tack without rod but hold it close just in case its required, if the panel overlaps or gap gets bigger, allow to cool and realign it and continue tacking until you reach the end, it may require a light tapping with a hammer for minor misalignment then simply run the weld along the joint, I favour without rod for normal panels that will be painted as it penetrates perfectly with gas welding, if the body is to be polished then I add rod to ensure the surface is flush when planished.
