I use this piece annually as a writing assignment in General Music (music appreciation) at the first of the year. Kids bullet thoughts while listening, then write a narrative as homework. They have the title and access at home to listen again if they need. I was impressed by the following 8th graders assessment (this student is not in band...but I think he should be.) : All music creates thoughts, emotions, and feelings. When I listen to Ludwig Van Beethovens Egmont Overture, in the beginning I feel worried but excited at the same time. As eh song goes on, the melody rises and falls I feel like as if i were running through a scary and dangerous forrest then i see a road leading straight to my house. As the end of the song approaches the melody weakens adn slows down I feel a warm and pleasant comfort in my body as if I had just won the championship. Music makes everyone feel differently. two people can listen to the same song and have different emotions and this is an example on how Beethovens music affects our body and soul.
