I use to love martial arts. I took Jujitsu for about 7 years, and taught a kids class for a time. I really enjoyed it. the reason I am addressing this is this has to do with our idea of consciousness, and deep sleep. It is said, that the reason we do not "experience consciousness" during deep sleep, is because all the mental images and senses are absent, and only the knowing is present. I find this difficult to believe, and even more so, the more I develop this knowing, which has always been here. When I was taking Jujitsu, we had to learn to fall. One of the more advanced falls was when someone was attempting to throw you head first into the mat, and you had to "flip" over and do a safe landing on your side, instead of your head. This was a very scary throw and fall for me, and for the first 6 months doing it, I would "black out" each time I took the fall. Now I did not loose consciousness. The throw would start, and I would go through the fall, and I would blank out completely until I found myself safely on the mat. I decided that this "black out" was out of some kind of fear, and not a "real" event. So one night, I decided to make friends with these falls, and did about 1000 of them on the mat. I started to laugh when I was thrown, and really relax into it. Now,, I do not black out at all, and can even talk or laugh through the throw. Before, I had no memory of the throw until I found myself on the mat, and now, I could look around, and remembered every bit of it. I was fully aware of the throw, where before, much like deep sleep, I had no knowledge of it. This brings me to the idea of deep sleep. I feel, that much like the scary throws discussed above, it is not that the mind shuts down, but we just do not remember it. I feel that deep sleep is when our true self, flies into the unknown and we are completely free. We just are too frightened to remember. In fact, if one puts electrodes on the scalp of someone in deep sleep, there will still be activity, which means that the mind is still requesting events, we are just too frightened to remember. Well, that is my take. good mind candy for a Monday. zp
