I use to visit each and every corner of Simdega District of Jharkhand State very often. One of my interesting observations is as under: Hockey seems to flow in the blood of each of the children of Simdega District consisting 93% of tribal population. Be it ‘Asunta Lakra (Captain)’, the sister of two national hockey heroes of India i.e. Vimal and Virendra Lakra – the district has produced many players who played for India at International level :- Michel Kindo(Olympian), Silbanus Dungdung (Olympian), Kanti Baa, Masira Surin, Sumrai Tete, Justin Kerketta, Vimal Lakra, Virendra Lakra, Edlin Kerketta, Asunta Lakra, Alma Guria, Puspa Topno, Sunita,James Kerketta, Ashrita Lakra and so on. While the present Goalkeeper for New Zealand Tour (Jr. Women) 2014 is ‘Sonal Minz’ - be it Men’s Team or Women’s Team – an Indian Hockey Team doesn’t seem complete without having players at key ranks from this region of Jharkhand State.
