I used to think that loving someone was a feeling. I’m so glad for those emotions, but the older that I get the more I am privileged to see long term love in action, and I’ve noticed something. Real love is so much more than emotions. Real love shows up at 2 a.m. when you’re rocking that child and he’s colicky. Real love shows up when the doctor gives you three options and none of them are what you want to hear. My feelings don’t get to tell me when or how to love those closest to me. Instead, I’m going to love first and let the feelings catch up.
