I used to wonder & ask from my teenage days- why is it that in Western society , those who became the flag bearers of success, specifically in the Entertainment business, those who became icons & role models for millions to pursue similar standards of Success, died with such regularity, from unnatural deaths- drug overdose, medication addiction, self inflicted injuries, depression, loneliness & suicide etc, while in the East or closer Home, it was a rarity !!!?? Has it to do with the facts that- west was primarily governed by the philosophy of Materialism, principles of unbridled Individualism, where naked Consumption of pleasure was a necessity & Success was measured in hedonistic terms ??!! (Shrinks, lawyers & counsellors/Gurus make a killing) , as opposed to the Orient where ( with all the evils & fault lines) the concept of Family & Community held supreme, & a certain Spiritualism was ingrained in the soul, & life & success was defined by certain age old Wisdom & traditional Principles ?!? So as we race to embrace the American Dream & celebrate a consumerist lifestyle, with a certain degree of a Individualism , are we too become vulnerable in handling Success ?? I am still asking !!
