I used to work with tolulene when I was a teenager working in the biology lab at the University of Utah. They had a big hooded/vented area where you had to dispose it because it was a hazardous material, but still I was exposed to it on almost a daily basis when I was doing DNA extractions and really had no idea how bad it was. I thought it was fun playing with all the chemicals! (When they say organic solvents, theyre meaning organic in the chemistry sense of the word, not the agricultural reference.)
