I usually dont feel compelled to share celebrity tragedy because I - TopicsExpress

I usually dont feel compelled to share celebrity tragedy because I never really feel connected to them since they are more symbols to me, not personal friends or family. I know some people feel differently, and I do have compassion towards celebrities, but in the past I felt it wasnt my place to feel loss or happiness over something so far removed from my own personal reality and for something that was often only communicated to a wide audience because of their fame, wealth, or appearance. In the case of Robin Williams, I have been surprised by the impact this has had on me. In the following article written by a head honcho at Cracked, he writes very candidly about the hardships that many comedians face (whether really famous or not at all famous) despite their monetary or superficial success. After the last day or so and after not really focusing largely on the death of Robin Williams, but just having let it impact me in a natural way. I now have a different appreciation for the role that celebrities play in our lives. Often, we do not relate to others unless we have a personal experience that we can associate with them. Be it a dog running away, a physical deformity, suicide, or anything else, celebrities play a far-reaching role in being a part of our lives by having us connect to each other without having the threat of a personal experience impacting us. It is tragic since they are people with families and loved ones, but at the same time they can be so meaningful because we can all have the opportunity to learn, but not be personally impacted by the loss. A celebrity, if we are familiar with them, if we have a memory associated with them, or if we somehow relate to them, can stop us in our tracks when something happens to them like a loss or a tragedy. Many times in our daily lives, things happen all around us that we dont associate with because the person that it happened to doesnt have meaning or importance to us in any real way. It sounds cold, but it is kind of true, isnt it? I have taken some time to think about why this is, for me anyway, and I get it now. There is a lesson to be learned with the death of Robin Williams and this article very genuinely and bluntly describes it. Take a few minutes to read it, I think you might find that it impacts you as well.
