I usually dont share personal thoughts/information, but I decided - TopicsExpress

I usually dont share personal thoughts/information, but I decided that I would share this after having a conversation for the past two days about rape. And, before anyone makes any assumptions, Ive NEVER been raped (or almost raped). But, as I was conversing with these people, it made me think a habit Ive acquired over the years, which was my dressing habits. If Im going somewhere by myself, I tend to cover up more than if I am with a group of people. To me, I should be able to dress however I want, but to others, that gives someone a right to approach you in an incorrect manner. And, pertaining to this conversation I was having with another person about rape, she said it explains why some men rape women and that is outrageous to me. Truth of the matter is, Ive been told most of my life to cover up, so I dont provoke a guy to rape me by various people. Ive even been told, dont run at night because you could get raped. Thats appalling. Its mind boggling. Its almost as if people are holding me responsible if something were to ever happen to me (you know, like they do with real victims). Well, she was wearing that revealing outfit, she should have seen that coming. OR She was outside at night, what else did she expect to happen. I mean, never mind the fact that most rapes occur by someone the victim knows. Or that you can be completely covered and still get raped. And its an issue for me because Im tired of some people saying that rape is bad all while justifying the rapist actions. Im tired of always looking over my shoulder because Ive been told by many people that Im a potential victim by being outside at night. (Do men face that same issue?) It makes me feel sorry for men as well. It makes me feel sorry because they are believed to be animals that cant control themselves around a woman who turns him on...that he will attack her if she shows too much skin or is alone at night.
