I usually end the week on a lighter note, but I found this young womans story irresistible. The organizers of the Miss Asia Pacific World Pageant awarded May Myat Noe of Myanmar the title of queen and a $100,000 gem encrusted tiara and, after the fact, asked May to have breast implants--something they might have thought of before making their decision. They had the gall to accuse her of lacking personality and loyalty to the organization, when she refused the procedure. She is now ashamed to be associated with the pageant, but will not give up the title or the tiara, until she receives an apology for the insult to her and to her country. Although she probably doesnt see it this way, I see her as a symbolic muscle reaction to the scalpels and lasers cutting away our self-acceptance to leave an ugly new standard of beauty. The young arent the only ones feeling the pressure. We can note today, after the passing of Joan Rivers, how a beloved comedienne fell victim to the cult of nip and tuck to give up her natural radiance for the face of a Batman villain. So, hang in there, May. Youre beautiful. mashable/2014/09/03/miss-asia-pacific-breast-implants/
