I usually have the opportunity to post good news about Carteret - TopicsExpress

I usually have the opportunity to post good news about Carteret and our progress; but today I have some unfortunate news to share with our community. It is my understanding that the insurance company representing our Fire Department is close to resolving a 2011 lawsuit filed by a former volunteer fire fighter and EMT employee. The suit alleged that a number of Carteret firefighters engaged in harassing conduct toward a female co-worker. Let me be clear, this type of conduct is not tolerated in Carteret. When these allegations were brought to the Borough’s attention, an investigation was conducted immediately by the Borough’s Legal Department and our recently-retired Chief of the Carteret Fire Department. As litigation progressed over the past few years, previously unavailable information came to our attention, which if true, is terribly disturbing and unbecoming of what we demand from our emergency-service professionals. The Borough of Carteret and our Administration maintains a zero-tolerance policy regarding acts of harassment and, consistent with that policy, formal disciplinary charges have been filed against the involved firefighters. Now that the civil matter is close to being resolved, our Administration will send a clear message to these firefighters that our community does not stand for this type of conduct.
